Grand Prix Doubles/Quarter Finals

Posted on Saturday 2 February 2008

Friday’s quarter final match (if you haven’t read about Thursday’s in the previous entry, it was a crazy one) was against the challenging team of Tony Cessna (the seeded singles player from KY I was able to beat in Ft. Myers, who hits the ball hard) and Bob Royden (a tall and lanky cut/touch shot artist from San Diego).

After exchanging a couple of breaks of serve in the first set, they were serving 5-4 for the set. Dick and I were able to break, hold, and break again to take the set 7-5.

In the second set, we “went away” and they cruised to an easy 6-1 victory.

We were able to regroup and started with a hold, then a break; and our next service game were down love-40, and fought back to get an add to go up 3-0. But we didn’t convert and ended up losing that game to go back on serve. Big swing in momentum.

We then stayed on serve till having a couple of break points at 3-4, 15-40. Weren’t able to convert either of those; so they held serve to go 4-4. And then they broke us to go up 5-4, serving for the match.

Well the “Cardiac Kids” pulled it together to break them, then serve a strong game at 5-5, and then break them again to take the quarters by the wacky scores of 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.

Saturday’s semi final match will be at 2 p.m. against the #2 seeds in the draw of 32, Ivo Barbic and Hill. Griffin, who I have never seen play; so we shall see what we shall see.
