How To Improve Your Serve

Posted on Wednesday 4 February 2009

If you want to improve the quality of your serve – especially on Big Points – you should use C.P.R. No, not Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, but a series of little pre-serve rituals that can dramatically improve your serving results.

As you stand at the service line (and probably bounce the ball) before each serve:

  • C: Take a deep, calming breath.
  • P: Picture where you want your serve to go.
  • R: Relax your wrist, arm, and shoulder (all the way through the service motion).

I picked up the idea for this acronym from the great, little book, “The Best Tennis of Your Life; 50 Mental Strategies for Fearless Performance,” by Jeff Greenwald. I will review the book in more detail in a little while (after I finish reading and rereading).
