I really miss my Luxilon Big Banger strings. But I am sure they were a major factor in my six-months of
shoulder problems. So what to do?
I have been playing with Technifibre, which is a multi-filament string – as compared to the Luxilon, which is a “solid†string. The Technifibre is much more forgiving; but just doesn’t give the extra “grab†and topspin that I got from the Luxilon.
Anyone have suggestions for what multi-filament, forgiving string might be out there that provides the extra grab and topspin without hurting your arm? Thanks.
I use technifibre and love it but would be interested on other suggestions
George,
Try Wilson NXT. I use 17 gage.
I’m afraid I can’t help much since I also love the Luxilon Big Banger strings. I tried the hybrid strings but share your views. They are indeed more forgiving, but just don’t deliver the same “pop” when you strike the ball. And yes the Luxilon strings are tough on your arm & perhaps even the shoulder, particularly for you since you play so much. I try to only play every other day, which seems to help, but of course doesn’t work for tournaments if you keep winning matches.
I’m using nxt tour 17. I find it very durable and so far has had no effect on my arm orshoulder, It is also available in 18 Ga. Good luck , Matt
When I have a string question, I go to Kay at Just Tennis. They’ve been doing this for 20+ years. Last week I told her I needed power but was starting to experience tennis elbow so she “re-fitted” me with the right type of string, gage and tension to accommodate my needs. In this case it was Wilson Sensation, 16, 60#. Just Tennis also has strung my racquets with what I believe is called “Tonic” — it’s real gut but only about $10 more than NXT or Sensation.
After trying a pile of strings, including combination of gauge changes and weights on my frames, I finally settled in on Babolat VS Thermogut 16 Touch strung mid range (#55) for my frame. It is smoothly consistent, holds up well even on moist clay, grabs the ball nicely without being silly about it, and does not send shock waves up the racquet every time I hit off center. It is a bit expensive, but I think it is worth the price.
String update: Thanks to Bob, i did ask Kay her opinion and she has suggested a combination of NXT 16g multifilament string in the mains and a (yellow!) Babolat Pro Hurricane Tour 17 String for the crosses. The web write-up is below…
Pro Hurricane Tour is the string of choice for Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick. Nadal uses this string for the entire stringbed, whereas Roddick uses the this as a hybrid with Babolat VS Gut in the cross strings.
Pro Hurricane Tour offers a firm, crisp feel that’s big on control. The string has an octagonal profile designed to produce increased ball bite and spin potential. Pro Hurricane Tour offers exceptional durability and our on court testing shows it to live up to its spin friendly billing. A great choice for players who like to take a big cut at the ball.
